Why I Took On The #ALSIceBucket Challenge

Since June 2014, you have probably seen videos out there of people pouring ice over themselves.  Chances are you have seen the #ALSIceBucketChallenge.

OI thought I would be spared from the #IceBucketChallenge, but yesterday I received a challenge from Nancie Welsh Benson! Honestly I knew nothing about this challenge until my son Garrett Tiebens told me about it. I did my research about ALS – Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and was truly saddened that currently there is no cure. Initially thought I would just donate and not do the ice bucket challenge. As I learned more and more about this worthy cause – and seeing even Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Martha Stewart and many of my friends doing this, I decided to do the ice bucket challenge too.  Here’s the video!

In keeping with the “pay-it-forward” mission, I am challenging these 3 HIGHLY INFLUENTIAL and POWERFUL people whom I love, respect and absolutely adore. It was a challenging decision given the many amazing people in my circle but I know that these 3 truly support worthy causes and have gigantic hearts to make a difference. (Sorry you were all top of mind I don’t think I’m the first one to challenge them, nor am I certain that they have done the challenge yet but here goes… Drum roll….. I challenge Mari Smith, Mike Koenigs and Mike Klingler.  They have 24 hours to respond or do the challenge… I look forward to their responses and videos.

This campaign is so successful that “viral” is even an understatement!  I am sure by the time you read this, millions and millions more are being donated to ALS and more global awareness is created.   Go to www.ALSA.org and find out more information.  You can start your own challenge by nominating your friends.  There are issues about water shortage in certain areas which makes people more cautious about the challenge.  Some people like Charlie Sheen are using money inside the buckets, some are using wine and others are using beach, lake or pool water.  Some people are simply against the challenge, and some would rather not participate in the actual act of pouring ice on themselves.

The effect of this media frenzy has satirical news channels even writing about how California is fining those who are answering the challenge. At the moment of this writing fines haven’t been imposed but it’s a personal choice and sensitivity.  If you choose to do the challenge, you can do so in moderation and make sure you do make a donation.    #ALSIceBucketChallenge #StrikeOutALS #LouGehrigsDisease #AmyotrophicLateralSclerosis
